Er zijn maar weinig mensen in de wereld van Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT’s) die de afgelopen stierenmarkt zóveel furore hebben gemaakt als Mike Winkelmann, beter bekend onder zijn pseudoniem Beeple. Deze Amerikaanse kunstenaar publiceert al jaren elke dag een kunstwerk als NFT. Hij werkt nu aan een fysieke studio om nieuwe mogelijkheden voor zijn kunst aan te boren.
Dat schrijft de kunstenaar op Twitter. Hij toont in een video hoe de forse studio wordt gebouwd, en hij benadrukt dat de getoonde ruimtes slechts de eerste helft vertegenwoordigen. Het wordt dus nog een stuk groter, waar hij binnenkort meer over zal plaatsen.
Winkelmann legt uit dat zijn kunst iets zou moeten doen met mensen, en dat lukt beter als de kunst te zien is in de echte wereld. Hij denkt dat dit het begin van de volgende ‘golf van verzamelaars’ zal vormen, en dat dit precies is wat nodig is om uit de berenmarkt te komen.
Wat hij precies van plan is met de ruimtes vertelt hij niet. Het ligt voor de hand dat het een soort galerij wordt, hij legt de nadruk op ‘fysieke kunst’ in zijn verhaal: “Ik denk dat mensen zullen begrijpen dat dit medium net als elk ander medium een manier is om schoonheid te brengen, discussies te veroorzaken en iets met ons te doen. Beeple is één van de meest invloedrijke kunstenaars in de NFT-wereld. Zijn werk ‘The First 5000 Days’ werd verkocht voor bijna 70 miljoen dollar. Het is één van de duurste NFT’s tot nu toe, en het zette hem op slag in de top drie van meest welvarende levende kunstenaars.
Zijn kunst heeft voornamelijk een futuristisch en ietwat dystopisch tintje en is vaak nogal groots uitgepakt. In zijn Everydays-collectie verbeeldt hij vaak enorme massaal geproduceerde voorwerpen en concepten die een toekomstbeeld vertegenwoordigen. Verder maakt hij ook onder andere short films.
