De rijkste kunstenaar van het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Damien Hirst, is begonnen om zijn eigen kunst, ter waarde van enkele miljoenen dollars, te verbranden. Het gaat om “The Currency” een NFT-project dat Hirst afgelopen jaar lanceerde met 10.000 NFTs die gekoppeld waren aan fysieke kunstwerken.
Nu is Hirst begonnen met het verbranden van honderden van die fysieke kunstwerken. Het project is onderdeel van een sociaal experiment van Hirst, waarin hij de waarde van pure digitale kunst tegenover fysieke kunst zet.
Verzamelaars die één van de 10.000 NFTs met een bodemprijs van 2.000 dollar kochten, kregen uiteindelijk één jaar de tijd om te beslissen of ze de NFT of het fysieke kunstwerk wilden bewaren.
Afgelopen juli was het tijd om te beslissen en kwam naar voren dat 5.149 mensen toch de voorkeur gaven aan het fysieke kunstwerk. De overige 4.851 kunstwerken van Hirst moesten dus op de brandstapel. Hirst geeft tegenover de BBC aan dat het verbranden van zijn kunst beter voelt dan verwacht.
“Veel mensen hebben het idee dat ik voor miljoenen dollars aan kunst verbrand, maar dat is niet waar. Ik transformeer deze fysieke kunstwerken simpelweg in NFTs door de fysieke versie te verbranden”, aldus Hirst één dag voordat hij aan het grote project begon.
“De waarde van kunst, digitaal of fysiek, die over het algemeen lastig te bepalen is, gaat met het verbranden van de fysieke werken over op de NFTs”, zo is de mening van Hirst. Uiteraard valt daar over te twisten.
Ergens voelt het vreemd om kunstwerken te verbranden in de fysieke wereld, omdat een token in een decentrale database dit werk in de digitale wereld zou vertegenwoordigen. In welke zin dat onlosmakelijke verbond tussen het kunstwerk en de NFT in kwestie bestaat is lastig aan te tonen.
De kunstcollectie van Hirst heeft op OpenSea een bodemprijs van 5,199 Ethereum (ETH) en daarmee ongeveer 6.727 dollar, een stuk hoger dan de instapprijs van 2.000 dollar waarop de collectie begon.
