Op 20 juli heeft Mojang Studios, het team achter het spel Minecraft, aangegeven dat zij geen gebruik willen maken van non-fungbile tokens (NFT) in haar spel.
Het bedrijf heeft in een statement laten weten dat het gebruik van blockchain technologie en NFT’s niet in hun waarden van creatieve inclusie en co-play thuishoort. Dit aangezien spelers met NFT’s beloningen kunnen verdienen buiten het spel om.
Mojang Studios gaf ook aan dat het gebruik van NFT’s sommige spelers een voordeel geeft die andere niet kunnen krijgen. Het NFT-systeem zorgt voor schaarsheid en uitsluiting binnen de community. Dit wil het team juist voorkomen. Daarom hebben zij hun community guidelines aangepast:
“NFT’s kunnen modellen van schaarste en uitsluiting creëren die in strijd zijn met onze richtlijnen en de geest van Minecraft, […] NFT’s omvatten niet al onze communities en creëren een scenario van de haves en de have-nots.”
Daarnaast stelt Mojang Studios dat het gebruik van in-game NFT’s het doel van het spel verandert. Spelers zijn dan niet meer gericht op plezier maken, maar meer met de speculatieve waarde van hun NFT’s.
Ook gaf het bedrijf aan bang te zijn voor de mogelijke implicaties voor het bedrijf zelf. Op deze manier is het voor hackers en oplichters interessant om Minecraft en haar spelers te targeten. Wanneer de NFT’s hard in waarde stijgen zullen oplichters er alles aan doen om de spelers op te lichten. Dit is al bij vele andere cryptocurrency games gebeurd. Mojang wil geen onveilig platform aan haar spelers bieden.
Hoewel het bedrijf op dit moment fel tegen de integratie van blockchain technologie in het spel is, kan dit nog veranderen. Het team heeft aangegeven wel de ontwikkelingen van deze sector in de gaten te houden om te zien of er iets in de toekomst uitkomt wat het spel wel kan helpen.
