Square Enix gaat non-fungible tokens (NFT) uitgeven van zijn beroemde Final Fantasy videogame series. De Final Fantasy NFT’s zullen lanceren op het Efinity platform van Enjin.
Het gaat dan specifiek om NFT’s van het computerspel Final Fantasy VII (7) ter viering van zijn 25ste verjaardag. Het spel lanceerde in 1997 op de Playstation en ontving onlangs nog een remake. Enjin kondigt het nieuws aan via Twitter:

De NFT’s worden volgens het persbericht in eerste instantie niet los verkocht, maar zijn gekoppeld aan fysieke actiefiguren en ruilkaarten. Final Fantasy fans kunnen voor $4 een pakje van zes ruilkaarten kopen. Deze worden in de lente van 2023 uitgegeven en worden geleverd met een NFT code.
De actiefiguren pakken een stukje duurder uit. Square Enix zal in de herfst van 2023 een actiefiguur van het hoofdpersonage ‘Cloud Strife’ uitbrengen voor $130 en een ‘premium’ versie van $160. Fans kunnen hun bestelling al reserveren.
Enjin is een van de eerste grote NFT spelers op de markt. Het bedrijf werd eigenlijk al in 2009 opgericht en ontwikkelde in 2017 de ERC-1155 standaard voor NFT’s op Ethereum (ETH).
Het bedrijf lanceerde zijn langverwachte Efinity platform in maart dit jaar op de Polkadot (DOT) blockchain. Enjin nam die beslissing vanwege de stijgende transactiekosten op Ethereum. De enjin coin (ENJ), nog wel op Ethereum, is met 88% gedaald sinds de top uit november 2021.
Of Final Fantasy fans deze NFT’s zullen omarmen, is maar de vraag. Een groot deel van de gaming community liet de afgelopen tijd luid en duidelijk horen dat zij niet bepaald enthousiast zijn over de komst van NFT projecten in deze sector.
Dat is begrijpelijk, aangezien de grote computerspeluitgevers de laatste jaren tonen dat zij geen moeite hebben om hun eigen fans op zoveel mogelijk manieren hun geld af te troggelen. Zelfs als dat ten koste gaat van de kwaliteit van het spel.
Fans vrezen dan ook dat NFT’s deze uitgevers wederom een nieuwe excuus geeft om dit nog een stap verder te nemen.
In mei van dit jaar kondigde Square Enix nog aan dat het bedrijf de rechten voor spellen als Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief en Legacy of Kain heeft verkocht om verder op NFT’s, blockchain en de metaverse in te spelen.
