Bij veel gamers vallen crypto en non-fungible tokens (NFT) niet direct in de smaak. Toch laat een recent onderzoek van Globant zien dat alsnog 34% van de gamers interesse heeft in het gebruik van crypto in de metaverse.
Een van de redenen waarom gamers het niet altijd goed kunnen vinden met crypto en NFT’s is de trend van microtransacties binnen games. Zodra een game-ontwikkelaar dit inzet binnen zijn games, lijkt het er al gauw op dat het spelers wil uitmelken om zoveel mogelijk geld te verdienen.
Toch is er alsnog interesse vanuit deze hoek als het om crypto in de metaverse gaat. YouGov vroeg in een onderzoek voor software-ontwikkelaar Globant aan 1.000 volwassen gamers hoe zij over dit hele concept denken.
Ten eerste valt op dat 40% van de ondervraagden interesse heeft in play-to-earn, oftewel verdienen met het spelen van spellen. Deze 40% stelt interesse te hebben in een mix tussen zowel spelen als verdienen. Niet geheel onverwacht stelt slechts 11% meer interesse te hebben in het verdienen van geld dan het spelen van spellen. 49% stelt juist meer interesse te hebben in het spelen.
Al met al is 34% geïnteresseerd in het gebruiken van cryptocurrencies, zoals bitcoin (BTC), binnen de metaverse. Er is dus geen complete afkeer te zien onder de gamers. Wel kocht slechts 16% van hen een NFT in het verleden.
De gamers werd daarnaast gevraagd of zij verwachten dat de metaverse de gaming-industrie zal veranderen. 52% is het daarmee eens, waarvan 51% verwacht dat dit een positieve impact zal hebben, 25% denkt juist van niet.
Gaming blijft een interessante industrie voor crypto. Ook de ex-CEO van Nintendo, Reggie Fils-Aimé, ziet grote potentie in blokchain voor games. Zo zei hij dit jaar:
“Er zijn games waarin ik 300 uur heb geïnvesteerd… als ik klaar ben om naar iets anders over te gaan, zou het dan niet geweldig zijn om geld te verdienen met wat ik heb opgebouwd?”
