De oprichter van Microsoft, Bill Gates, heeft zelden een goed woord over voor de crypto industrie. Wederom haalde de miljardair uit naar de wereld van crypto. Vooral non-fungible tokens (NFT) moesten eraan geloven. Volgens Gates zijn NFT’s en cryptocurrencies totaal waardeloos en is het hele idee van investeren in “plaatjes van apen” gebaseerd op de greater-fool theory.
Tijdens een klimaatconferentie waar Gates te gast was kwam ook de crypto industrie ter sprake. Volgens Gates is deze hele industrie eigenlijk op niets gebaseerd. Dit komt omdat crypto activa niets produceren, in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld aandelen van bedrijven die dat wel doen.
Bill Gates steekt daarom ook de draak met het idee dat NFT’s zogenaamd de wereld zullen verbeteren. Volgens hem is dit een belachelijk idee. Daarnaast stelt hij dat hij op geen enkele manier gemoeid is met de wereld van crypto. Hij heeft geen long posities, maar ook geen short posities. Hij laat de industrie totaal links liggen.
“Het is duidelijk dat dure digitale beelden van apen de wereld enorm gaan verbeteren. […] Ik ben gewend aan activaklassen zoals een boerderij waar ze output hebben of een bedrijf waar ze producten maken […] Ik ben er totaal niet bij betrokken. Ik ben niet long of short,”
De greater-fool theory die Bill Gates aanhaalt houdt in dat investeerders in staat zijn om geld te verdienen binnen een markt waar alles veel te duur is. Het gaat er slechts om dat er genoeg mensen zijn die een bepaald goed, in dit geval dus cryptocurrencies of NFT’s, voor een nóg hogere prijs willen kopen. In dit geval worden die personen aangeduid als ‘fool’.
Het standpunt van Bill Gates komt vrij nauw overeen met die van een van de meest legendarische investeerders aller tijden, Warren Buffett. Ook Buffett heeft met enige regelmaat kritiek op de crypto industrie omdat het in zijn ogen niets produceert en dus niets van waarde aan de economie toevoegt.
