GameStop, de bekende Amerikaanse videogamewinkel, heeft nu een eigen wallet voor cryptocurrencies. Het gaat dan om een Ethereum (ETH) wallet voor ETH en ERC-20 tokens, alsmede voor non-fungible tokens (NFT). Dat onthult het bedrijf via Twitter op 23 mei:

De GameStop wallet is een self custody wallet, oftewel een digitale portemonnee waar de gebruiker zelf verantwoordelijk is voor zijn opgeslagen crypto. Het bedrijf waarschuwt dan ook voor de risico’s omtrent zo’n wallet.
Je bent namelijk zelf verantwoordelijk voor je wachtwoord en voor je zogeheten recovery phrase. Als je deze kwijt bent, verlies je toegang tot je wallet en zijn de opgeslagen crypto mogelijk voor altijd verloren. GameStop benadrukt dat zijn medewerkers nooit zullen vragen om je wachtwoord en/of recovery phrase en dat je deze met niemand moet delen. Ook benadrukt het bedrijf dat het om een bètalancering gaat; er kunnen dus nog fouten en kwetsbaarheden in het programma zitten.
Verder maakt de nieuwe crypto-wallet gebruik van een layer-2 schalingsoplossing voor snellere transacties op Ethereum. Het gaan dan om het layer-2 netwerk van Immutable X (IMX). Gamestop kondigde in februari aan dat het in samenwerking met Immutable X later dit jaar ook een NFT marktplaats wil lanceren. De prijs van IMX reageert momenteel nauwelijks op het nieuws terwijl dit in februari nog voor een stijging zorgde.
De aandelen van GameStop (GME) trokken begin vorig jaar massaal de aandacht van particuliere investeerders, veelal afkomstig van het sociale mediaplatform Reddit. Toen kwam naar buiten dat institutionele investeerders door de coronapandemie massaal short gingen op het bedrijf, maar dat pakte anders dan verwacht uit toen particulieren flink investeerden.
Vervolgens sloeg deze “retail fomo” over naar crypto en dan vooral beruchte meme tokens als dogecoin (DOGE) en shiba inu (SHIB). Deze koersen stegen vervolgens ongekend hard, maar zijn sindsdien beide met bijna 90% weer gedaald. Onlangs leek een dergelijke situatie af te spelen met de privacy coin monero (XMR).
