Een tijdje terug lanceerde het team achter de beroemde Bored Ape Yacht Club non-fungible token (NFT) collectie ook een eigen ERC-20 token. ApeCoin (APE) was de naam en direct kreeg de token een grote lading aandacht. Zelfs grote ethereum (ETH) investeerders, ofwel whales, waren geinteresseerd. Op dit moment staat ApeCoin zelfs op de derde plaats van meest populair coins onder deze whales.
Sinds mei is het handelsvolume van ApeCoin gemiddeld zo’n $2,07 miljard per dag. Dat is een duidelijk signaal dat de interesse van investeerders in het project nog altijd erg groot is. Data van WhaleStats bevestigt dit signaal. ApeCoin staat namelijk op plek 3 van de meest gekochte tokens door de top-100 Ethereum adressen.
Alleen de stablecoin USDC en ethereum zelf zijn nog populairder. Opmerkelijk is het feit dat ApeCoin zelfs populairder is dan Tether (USDT). Gemiddeld kopen de top-100 ethereum adressen zon 12.721 APE tokens met een marktwaarde van $157.609.
De populariteit van ApeCoin is natuurlijk veelal te danken aan het succes van de Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT collectie van Yuga Labs. Deze collectie met hun iconische apen is vandaag de dag de op-twee-na-grootste NFT collectie naar verkoopvolume.
Direct na de lancering van ApeCoin schoot de koers omhoog. Binnen enkele minuten was de prijs van APE gestegen van zo’n $5 tot $40. Dat is stijging van maar liefst 700%! Er bestond echter wel behoorlijk wat onduidelijkheid over de daadwerkelijke prijs van APE. Deze prijs kwam op een aantal grote crypto exchanges niet overeen. Zo bereikte de koers van APE op Gate.io zelfs een astronomische $214.
Na een serieuze daling tot rond de $10 werd wederom een sterke stijging ingezet. Opnieuw werden prijzen tot diep in de $20 bereikt. Dit bleek echter weer van korte duur, want aan het einde van april zakte de koers van APE volledig onderuit samen met de rest van de crypto markt. Na het neerzetten van een dieptepunt op $8, wist de koers op het moment van schrijven weer iets omhoog te krabbelen tot rond de $9,8.
