Berkshire Hathaway Inc CEO Warren Buffett investeert nu in bitcoin (BTC) ondanks zijn negatieve houding tegenover cryptocurrencies. Buffet en Charlie Munger, de vice-voorzitter van Berkshire Hathaway, hebben zich in het verleden uitgelaten over cryptocurrencies. Buffet heeft crypto ‘rattenvergif’ genoemd en zei dat zij zelfs geen bitcoin zou kopen als de koers $25 per stuk was.
Munger heeft bij een jaarlijks algemene aandeelhoudersvergadering ook over bitcoin gesproken. Hij zei: “Als je je eigen pensioenrekening hebt en je vriendelijke financiële adviseur stelt voor dat je al het geld in bitcoin stopt, zeg dan gewoon nee,“. Munger noemde bitcoin daarna ook nog ‘een soort geslachtsziekte‘
Dit komt door een indirecte investering in bitcoin. In juni 2021 heeft Berkshire Hathaway $500 miljoen geïnvesteerd in de Braziliaanse bank Nubank. Deze positie werd vergroot toen het bedrijf beursgenoteerd werd onder de naam Nu Holdings.
Het was al een tijd bekend dat Nubank een bank is die enthousiast zijn over cryptocurrencies. Onlangs is bekendgemaakt dat de bank haar cliënten de mogelijkheid gaat geven om in cryptocurrencies te handelen. Rekeninghouders kunnen hierdoor in bitcoin en ethereum (ETH) handelen. Daarnaast gaat Nubank ook 1% van haar cash omzetten naar bitcoin.
Nubank biedt al verschillende exchange traded funds (ETF’s) aan haar cliënten waardoor zij exposure konden krijgen tot cryptocurrencies.
Nu bekend is gemaakt dat Nubank 1% van haar cash om gaat zetten in bitcoin en Berkshire Hathaway investeert in Nu Holdings, waar Nubank onder valt. En dus krijgt Warren Buffet indirect ook bitcoin op de balans. Dat is echter nog niet alles. Berkshire Hathaway investeert daarnaast ook nog in Visa Inc, wat er ook weer voor zorgt dat Buffet een deel van een CryptoPunk non-fungible token (NFT) bezit.
Of dit besluit van Nubank ervoor gaat zorgen dat Buffet zijn investering gaat heroverwegen is natuurlijk onbekend, echter lijkt dit onwaarschijnlijk door het grote belang van Buffet in het bedrijf. Buffet zal er mee moeten leven dat hij nu ook bloot is gesteld aan de cryptocurrencymarkt.
