De verkoop van ‘The Otherside’ non-fungible tokens (NFT), van de maker van de bekende Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT’s, was een enorm succes! Apecoin (APE) bezitters konden voor 305 APE een van de 55.000 NFT’s krijgen, en dat deden zij massaal.
The Otherside is een metaverse-project van Yuga Labs, de maker van de BAYC NFT-collectie. Onderdeel van het nieuwe project is de lancering van Otherdeed NFT’s. Deze tokens geven eigenaren het recht om straks land te claimen in de nieuwe virtuele wereld.
Gisteren ging de verkoop, ook wel mint genoemd, van start. Binnen drie uur tijd waren alle 55.000 beschikbare NFT’s verkocht. Om een Otherdeed NFT te bemachtigen moest men 305 APE inleveren, ter waarde van op dat moment ongeveer $5.800. Kortom, Yuga Labs haalde met de verkoop maar liefst ruim $300 miljoen op!
Deelnemers moesten zichzelf overigens wel verifiëren door een know-your-customer (KYC) proces te doorlopen. Dit om mogelijke problemen met toezichthouders in de toekomst te voorkomen.
Omdat APE bezitters hun cryptocurrency via het Ethereum (ETH) netwerk naar het desbetreffende smart contract moesten sturen, ondervond het netwerk gedurende de drie uur een enorme belasting. Aangezien deelnemers maar al te graag een Otherdeed NFT wilden bemachtigen, raakten zij met elkaar verzeild in een gas war.
Hierdoor schoten de transactiekosten omhoog waarmee ethereum miners in slechts een uur tijd ruim $87 miljoen verdienden.

In totaal zou er $172 miljoen aan extra transactiekosten zijn betaald tijdens de gas war. Hiervoor Yuga Labs overigens kritiek. Zo zei de ontwikkelaar Foobar:
“Jullie hebben een vreselijk ongeoptimaliseerd contract geschreven en creëerden een gas war, logen door te zeggen het Nederlandse veilingmechanisme te gaan gebruiken om je eigen verhaal op te pompen en verborgen hoeveel wallets in aanmerking kwamen voor de mint.”
In totaal zullen er 100.000 Otherdeed NFT’s worden gemaakt. Daarvan zijn er nu dus 55.000 verkocht. De overige 45.000 NFT’s worden middels een airdrop aan BAYC en MAYC NFT-bezitters uitgedeeld.
De apecoin koers steeg in aanloop naar de mint flink. Aangezien men APE moest inruilen voor een Otherdeed NFT, nam de vraag toe en daarmee de waarde van de crypto. Nu de mint is afgelopen crasht de koers echter meteen. Op het moment van schrijven staat APE ruim 25% in de min.
