Gisteren stond het ethereum nieuws vooral in het teken van de enorm succesvolle Otherdeed non-fungible token (NFT) verkoop van de makers van de Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT-collectie. Een bijwerking van dit enorme succes was naast enorm hoge transactiekosten op Ethereum ook een enorm aantal aan ETH dat werd vernietigd.
Ethereum transactiekosten zijn opgedeeld in de basiskosten en een soort fooi. De basiskosten worden sinds de EIP-1559 update vernietigd, ook wel burnen genoemd. De verwachting is dat dit mechanisme ETH na de grote ETH 2.0 update deflatoir kan gaan maken. Dan zou er dus meer ETH vernietigd worden dan dat er nieuwe bijkomen.
Gisteren kregen we daar al een klein voorproefje van. Uit data, gedeeld door Data_Always op Twitter, blijkt dat er gisteren waarschijnlijk 70.000 ETH is vernietigd.

“Deze schatting gaat ervanuit dat de rest van de dag een normale burn zal zijn. We zouden gemakkelijk kunnen zien dat het aantal boven de 70k gaat, omdat andere transacties gemiste blockspace moeten inhalen. Het is gewoon onvergelijkbaar met alles wat we eerder hebben gezien.”
Zoals te zien op de bovenstaande grafiek is de piek van gisteren een behoorlijke toename ten opzichte van de vorige all-time high (ATH). In januari van dit jaar werd nog bijna de 20.000 vernietigde ETH aangetikt, maar gisteren ging het netwerk daar dus flink overheen. Maar waar komt deze plotselinge toename opeens vandaan?
Dat heeft alles te maken met de NFT-verkoop van het ‘The Otherside’ metaverse-project. Dit project werd opgericht door Yuga Labs, wat ook achter de Bored Ape Yacht Collection NFT’s zit. Investeerders en geïnteresseerden die de NFT’s wilden bemachtigen, moesten apecoin (APE) inruilen middels een smart contract waarna zij de NFT’s in ruil terugkregen. Door de enorme populariteit van het project namen de activiteiten op het netwerk sterk toe, met de bovenstaande piek in vernietigde ETH en torenhoge transactiekosten tot gevolg.
