Ook Memphis Depay is nu lid van de beruchte Bored Ape Yacht Club (BYAC). De Nederlandse voetbalster kocht onlangs een non-fungible token, of NFT, uit deze collectie van verveelde apen. Dat laat de ex-PSV’er op 1 februari weten via Twitter:

BYAC is een collectie van 10.000 ‘unieke’ plaatjes van verveelde apen die verkocht worden als NFT. Het afgelopen jaar zijn deze NFT’s enorm populair aan het worden. Ze worden regelmatig verkocht voor honderdduizenden dollars aan ethereum (ETH) per stuk en de meest zeldzame exemplaren worden soms zelfs voor enkele miljoenen verkocht.
De laatste tijd zien we ook veel beroemdheden zich aan deze verveelde apen wagen. Zo kocht Eminem nog een maand geleden een Bored Ape NFT voor 123,45 ETH, toen ongeveer $462.000 waard.
Via OpenSea, de grootste marktplaats ter wereld voor NFT’s, is te zien dat Depay Bored Ape nummer 7921 kocht. Hij kocht deze NFT wellicht op 24 januari voor 110 ETH. Opvallend is dat de ether koers op 24 januari een duik maakte richting $2.200. Dat betekent wellicht dat Depay zijn Bored Ape voor ergens tussen de $240.000 en $265.000 kocht. Dit is niet door Depay bevestigd.
Ook is op OpenSea te zien dat de NFT alweer te koop staat. Bored Ape #7921 heeft in de afgelopen dagen echter pas 1 bod ontvangen van 0,153 wrapped ether (WETH) ter waarde van $434. Op OpenSea is te zien dat Depay wellicht ook een hond uit de Bored Ape Kennel Club bezit, twee “Lil’ Heroes” en een eigen NFT heeft genaamd “Memphis.”
De laatste tijd is er een sterke toename te zien aan kritiek over NFT’s. Ook het Twitterbericht van Depay zit vol met mensen die het plaatje van de verveelde aap kopiëren en plakken met de melding “ik bezit hem ook!” Echter kunnen zij hun versie niet voor een kwart miljoen verkopen. Kanye West liet onlangs ook weten niet al te enthousiast over NFT’s te zijn.
