Iemand had gisteren maar liefst 124 duizend ethereum (ETH) betaald, ter waarde van $532 miljoen (!), voor een zogenaamde CryptoPunk. Het ging om CryptoPunk #9998:

CryptoPunks zeer populaire non-fungible tokens (NFT’s) van pixelplaatjes op Ethereum. In het afgelopen jaar zijn meerdere CryptoPunks al voor meerdere miljoenen per stuk verkocht. Dit was echter verreweg het hoogste bedrag dat iemand ooit had betaald voor een NFT. Het was zelfs het hoogste bedrag dat iemand ooit had betaald voor ‘kunst.’
In eerste instantie vroegen mensen zich af of het hier om witwaspraktijken ging. Kort daarna kwam naar buiten dat het wellicht om een publiciteitsstunt ging. Iemand had namelijk de CryptoPunk van zichzelf gekocht. Hij of zij deed dit met behulp van een zogenaamde flash loan contract, bekend uit decentralized finance (DeFi).
Via het contract leende deze persoon zo veel mogelijk, gebruikte deze lening om de NFT te kopen, en betaalde vervolgens de lening weer terug. Het was dus allemaal een grote grap? Maar waarom zou iemand dit doen? Het was wellicht alleen maar om aandacht te trekken, zegt Robert Miller:

Dat betekent dat de duurste CryptoPunk nog steeds CryptoPunk #7523 is, die in juni voor maar liefst $11,7 miljoen werd verkocht in een veiling van Sotheby’s. De duurste NFT verkoop ooit blijft vooralsnog het kunstwerk van ‘Beeple.’ Deze NFT werd voor in maart voor $69,3 miljoen verkocht. Onlangs sloeg iemand nog zelfs een van bod $10 miljoen af voor een CryptoPunk.
Larva Labs, uitgever van de CryptoPunks, meldt dat ze voortaan dit soort transacties zullen filteren:

Deze week kwam naar buiten dat inmiddels zelfs Disney zich aan de NFT wereld waagt. Daarnaast kondigde Adobe deze week aan dat het een NFT functie gaat inbouwen in het populaire Photoshop programma. CREAM Finance was deze week het slachtoffer van een flash loan aanval.
